Ion plating technology significantly improves the adhesion and density of coatings by introducing high-energy ion bombardment during the vapor deposition process. Among these, multi-arc ion plating (also called cathodic arc ion plating) directly uses cold cathode vacuum arc discharge to simultaneously vaporize and highly ionize the coating material. Wang Fuzhen and other scholars define it as 'an ion plating technology that uses cold cathode vacuum arc discharge as both the evaporation and ionization source.' This technique achieves an ionization rate of 70% to 90%, making it one of the most direct and efficient ways to get high-density metal plasma nowadays.

The core of multi-arc ion plating lies in cold cathode vacuum arc discharge. The discharge doesn’t cover the entire cathode target surface but is concentrated on numerous cathode spots, each about a few microns to a hundred microns in diameter, constantly moving. The current density at these spots can reach 10⁵~10⁷ A/cm², and under such extreme power density, the spots experience instantaneous local explosive evaporation, directly ionizing the solid target material through mechanisms like field emission, forming a plasma jet composed of high-density metal ions, electrons, and neutral particles. This direct conversion from solid to plasma is what defines all the process characteristics of this technique.

Based on the above mechanism, multi-arc ion plating shows three outstanding advantages:

1)High ionization rate and strong bombardment effect: The film material has the highest ionization rate, providing key physical conditions for ion bombardment-induced interface pseudo-diffusion and densification during film formation, which makes the film layer extremely adhesive.

2)Flexibility in arranging the evaporation source: The cathode target itself is the evaporation source, with no liquid molten pool, so it can be placed in any spatial orientation, greatly enhancing the flexibility of source placement for large and unusually shaped workpieces.

3)"Integrated material-energy supply": The arc source provides both the film-forming material and the high-energy ions for bombardment at the same time. The equipment is compact, the deposition rate is high, and it's suitable for large-scale industrial production.

Multi-arc ion plating has already formed a mature process system:

1)Hard coatings for industrial molds:Depositing nitride or carbonitride coatings like TiN, TiAlN, CrN, and AlCrN can multiply the wear resistance and high-temperature oxidation resistance of tools and molds.

2)Decorative and protective coatings:In fields like architectural hardware, bathroom fixtures, and watches, precise craftsmanship is used to achieve gold-like TiN, gun black TiCN, and other color finishes, combining both decorative and corrosion-resistant functions.

3)Other expansions: With the advancement of magnetic filtration technology, its applications in high-end coatings for precision machinery, biomedical use, and high-temperature protection are also rapidly expanding.
